Credit to from @fash_rev (@get_regrann) - While the rainforest burns, we need to know where our leather comes from.
Fashion Revolution shares the world’s condemnation of the burning of the Amazon Rainsforest, not least because of its links with the fashion, footwear and accessories industries. Scientists at Brazil’s National Institute of Space Research calculate that there are 35 per cent more fires so far this year than in the average last eight years.
Brazil is the second biggest exporter of beef supplying 20% of the world’s beef (second only to America). It follows that Brazil’s cattle rangers are supplying the same proportion of the world’s leather. The fashion industry must take responsibility for the leather handbags, shoes and accessories contributing to the deforestation of the rainforests. “I’ve been thinking about the media frenzy and the reaction from the ‘luxury’ fashion industry to the Notre Dame fire,” says Fashion Revolution’s Global Network Program and Content Manager @josswhipple . “Aren’t these the exact same brands who are profiting from the leather produced as a result of the devastation in the Amazon? Where are the millions in restoration funds now? Nothing about this is luxurious, everything about this is devastating.” Our country teams around the world have also weighed in. Check out @fash_rev_madagascar and @fash_rev_brasil for demands to the fashion indsutry in this crisis of deforestation.
On our blog, we’re sharing our full statement, along with the tangible list of ways that you can help, from signing the @Greenpeace petition to writing to your favourite fashion brands to learn about their leather sources policies.

  • Another aspect of conscious travel - staying in hotels. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with collecting all the sample shampoos and bar soaps available in hotels. Always packaged in single-use plastic, only to be used few times before being thrown away forever. We often use #waronplastic but plastic is not bad in itself - by buying a plastic container once, I can now carry my bar soaps everywhere I go and I don't have to be using these tiny soaps in hotels at all. And they don't even take that much space in my luggage! :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #uofg #zerowastebathroom #zerowastetravel

  • Traveling sustainably - is there really such a thing? If it is, how can I achieve it? With each flight we take, we increase our carbon footprint. But what are the convenient and effective alternatives? How can I, on a personal level, travel more sustainably? Trying to lower your waste while traveling is actually not that hard - my bar soaps aren't liquids so I don't have to be taking them out repeatedly while questioning airport policies and easy swaps like these toothpaste tabs from @lush really make washing your teeth at airport feel almost, well, normal. What are your tips for sustainable travel? Do you just avoid flying completely and research other options? Or do you think there's not much we can do unless we change our entire transportation system? Share your thoughts below :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #uofg #sustainablechoices #sustainabletransport

  • Throwback Thursday to our Yoga&Gardening session done in collaboration with @glasgowuniversityyogaclub ! Can you believe it's already been one month since #gogreenweek2019? I definitely can't... The past month has gone so fast and I haven't even stopped to take a deep breath and relax - and I'm even training to become a yoga instructor! Such irony, isn't it... With exams and deadlines approaching it is VERY easy to forget to take a break and put conscious effort into taking care of yourself :) Joining our gardening session can definitely help to lower your stress levels, but any activity you like will do, whether it's a sport or a creative hobby! Would you be interested in another Yoga&Gardening session? Let us know in the comments :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #uofg #breathandrelax #yogaforstress

  • Go Green Week Day 3: In sustainability and climate action we often feel like our events or actions are not reaching an audience as big as we would like to or as fast as it's needed. We often struggle dealing with authorities or face misunderstandings and rejection. In situations like these, it is important to remember - we are not fighting alone and all our fights have meaning. All groups and initiatives share the same passion and message and together can achieve the change which is necessary. Just like @gretathunberg did, we can do it too, the power of an individual and groups, however small should never be underestimated. #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #climateaction #noplanetb #savetheplanet #fortheplanet

  • The semester has started and everything seems to be exactly how it used to be... Is there anything you'd like to change? Have you set yourself any resolutions or goals for the next semester? What about taking part in #veganuary? Industrial farming largely contributes to the production of carbon dioxide emissions - while the problem requires a governmental action, the power of an individual should not be undermined. We make an active choice to support industrial farming by consuming a lot of meat and dairy products - you don't need to become a vegan in a day, but why not try to have a meat-free day each week? You'll soon realise vegan cooking is simple and as delicious as anything else :) Like this amazing apple crumble! Message us if you're interested in the recipe! #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #vegansofglasgow #universityofglasgow #vegancakes

  • On the twelfth day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... a well-deserved break! No matter how we present it on social media, living sustainably is hard. If you have problems, whether personal or financial, reducing waste and thinking about your carbon footprint really is the last thing on your mind... Sustainability is something which becomes more natural over time, but initially it's hard and challenging - just like eating healthy food or exercising. So, just like with any 'behavioural change', once in a while it's good to have a break, especially when it's a special day :) Merry Christmas from the GUEST team! #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #zerowastechristmas

  • On the eleventh day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... sustainably wrapped gifts! Each Christmas, Brits throw away around 108 million rolls of wrapping paper and 40 million rolls of sticky tape - surely there are less wasteful ways of wrapping your presents? Besides the option of reusing the same bags each year, you can also experiment with wrapping gifts in old newspapers (or materials for your qualitative methods course, haha #studentlife) or using tote bags and scarves! Tote bags and scarves are great gifts on their own so surely you can't go wrong with that ;) And as for sticky tape, do you know you can easily make your own ECO GLUE??? You just need to boil 120ml of water, slowly add 10g of flour and 10g of corn starch, let it cook until it gets thicker and then add a spoon of vinegar - well how amazing is that? #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #ecoglue #ecoalternatives

  • On the tenth day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... eco-conscious energy use! Apparently, Brits are wasting £4.4 billion each year just by leaving lights on at home - and at Christmas time, leaving on your festive lighting for few hours can equal your electricity consumption over 23 days! Christmas lights look amazing in the cities, but for example Spanish town halls spend 30 million kWh on Christmas lights alone, resulting in the emission of more than 10 million kg of carbon dioxide - isn't that crazy? We all enjoy having our fairy lights on, but think about turning them off whenever you're not in the room - you're going to save both the planet and your bank account! #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #turnoffthelights #reduceyourcarbonfootprint

  • On the ninth day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... time with friends! Few posts back I talked about the importance of spending time alone - an equally important thing is to spend time with your close friends and giving them your attention! When we're struggling, stressed or becoming depressed, we often avoid social situations. Many times it's because of our own insecurities and fears, but people can interpret it as our lack of interest in being with them. If you feel like one of your friends might be having symptoms of depression, try to not take it personally and try your best to show them you're there for them. Shouldn't Christmas time be about spending time with your closest ones? :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #mentalhealthawareness

  • On the eighth day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... vegan meal alternatives! Along with the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to climate change and is responsible for around 10% of carbon emissions globally. While eating sustainably is not as simple as just becoming vegan, reducing the consumption of meat and animal products definitely is better for the planet - and often equally tasty! If you have time this year, why not experiment with your Christmas dinner menu? Swap the regulars for a nut roast, lentil "meatloaf" or just try some vegan desserts, like this amazing carrot cake! Are you going to be innovative this year? What are you planning for your Christmas dinner? :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #veganchristmas

  • On the seventh day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... time for myself! Festive season can be exhausting. We often spend time hurrying, chasing others and end up feeling tired, not to mention many students are going through exam period... At times like these it is easy to forget to take proper care of yourself and increased stress and not enough sleep are factors which can increase chances of developing mental health problems. If you're struggling, ask for help! If you're feeling unwell, share your concerns with others! And if no one is there, have a 'you' time each day and talk yourself through what's happening in your life - I find 'self-talk' very helpful when I feel overwhelmed and I often realize how my fears don't really have a 'real' reason, does that make sense? I find it much more simple to then realize my value and the progress I've made. Take care of others, but also think about yourself! :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #mentalhealthawareness
• On the sixth day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... conscious travelling! Do you ever think about your carbon footprint? Christmas can be a time of many family visits and endless travelling - personally, I've already taken one flight (one more to go), multiple car and bus rides and one train. And there's definitely more to come... Visiting your family is important and cycling in snow can be dangerous, but try to think about the different options when travelling - taking a train or sharing a car with multiple people are some of the more sustainable options! Do you travel a lot during holidays? What's your preferred choice of transport? Mine is definitely the train :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #sustainabletransport #sustainablechristmas #universityofglasgow

  • On the fifth day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... homemade baking! For many of us Christmas is a time of abundance, we buy, we eat and we often throw away the excess. For some, our excess may be the only meal they have - if you have spare time and money, why not bake some oat bars or biscuits and give them out to homeless people on the streets who are not as lucky as we are? Or bring them leftovers from your dinner? Shouldn't festive season be about thinking about each other? So why not also give back to the community? :) #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #givebacktothecommunity

  • On the fourth day of sustainable Christmas my true love sent to me... eco gifts! While giving handmade gifts is amazing, not everyone is a craftsy person! If you're conscious about the gifts you're giving, why not give eco-friendly gifts or something from small local businesses? Buying eco-friendly gifts like reusable cups or locally made soaps is a great way to share the message of sustainability while supporting your local businesses! Would you want to receive eco-friendly gifts? What is on your "sustainable wishlist" this year? #allthingssustainable #UofGreen #universityofglasgow #sustainablechristmas #ecochristmas
