  • Don’t you want to get stronger and more functional as you get older?  Do your work .  As we approach the age of 50, strength or resistance training is crucial for maintaining the ability to have an active and independent lifestyle.
It turns out the the average 30-35 year old person will experience roughly a 25 percent decline in his or her muscle strength and tone by the age of 70-75, and up to a 50 percent decline approaching the age of 90.  Simply doing aerobic exercise such as walking or light treadmill workouts will not be adequate to preserve muscle tone, bone health, balance and posture. If you are not engaging in strength or resistance training, the chances are high that you will lose strength and become less functional as you age.

  • Sis is getting ready this morning and realizes she doesn’t have her shoes with her that go with her outfit (a white t-shirt, long, black skirt and white tights and she showed up in pj’s and slides). So I have to improvise....

I find some nike tights, adidas tennis shoes and socks at our house. She’s not happy or convinced my outfit is going to work....

She comes to me and points to her exposed leg and says, “ It’s winter, what if I fall?” 😂...

Me, “Why would you fall? You’re graceful, athletic and powerful.” She’s not buying it and is pouting. Then I say, “You do gymnastics.” She needed evidence I guess. Sold!!!...
.
That was a close one, no meltdown....

  • A few months back I got a slightly off-putting comment from one of the younger surgeons on this forum about scapholunate ligament reconstruction.
I posted the immediate post operative image of this patient, who was reconstructed using the Brunelli technique. I followed the description of the procedure by the statement - All Done!!! This was followed by this surgeon criticizing my stated finality of treatment of that patient. While I did not imply finality of treatment, I realized that I need to change the way I explain my cases.
It is true that the reconstructive procedure is just the tip of the iceberg, the beginning of the rehabilitation, fraught with radiographic disappointment in a handful of cases. However Xrays are not the patient and most of the cases I have ever had have gone on to good use of the affected extremity and returned to most or all of their pre-injury activity.
This Xray is that of the same patient 4 months down the line from the SL reconstruction and going strong. The red arrow marks the reconstructed ligament and normal SL distance of 2mm. As I continue to learn and will always, I welcome all the constructive criticism, because this forum is for learning for everyone. Happy Friday and All Done !!! (Until the 6 month Followup).
