  • This is not a portrait of a sadhu, or Hindu holy man. This is a portrait of a homeless man who gets up around 6:30am every day, paints his face and charges tourists money to take his photo along the Ganges River in Varanasi, India. Some might say he’s a fraud, but it could also be argued that he’s a sharp opportunist who inadvertently keeps some elements of Hinduism alive for the digital generation. Playing dress up for gullible tourists with DSLRs and iPhones isn’t exactly noble, but if he’s taking care of his family or using the money to pay for food, who are we to judge? And might we be a little bit more curious about the pillars of Hinduism after a slightly uncomfortable cultural exchange like this? I know I was. My local guide asked that we not give money to beggars, but he told us that if we wanted to take photos of the sadhus, they expected money. He then added that sadhus are self appointed, and that real sadhus would never accept money, nor would they be making the rounds in an urban area like Varanasi. He did not explicitly state that the sadhus of Veranasi were imposters or bad Hindus; rather, he left it on us to decide. Not every guide does this, and I’m sure there are plenty of snap happy tourists who believe these men are the real deal, or ignore this info because it makes for a unique photo. This man falls into a sticky gray area, in which tourism, money, culture and ethics play a role, and I find it all utterly fascinating. If he’s commodifying his culture, is it equally unethical for us to buy in? I think it is, but again, this is open to interpretation. Maybe there’s more I don’t know, and maybe, as an American traveler, I have a warped perception of this cultural conflict. While it may be problematic for me to even post this image on a platform where oh, 30% of users actually read captions in their entirety, I do hope that providing context can facilitate a thoughtful discussion. So, if you’ve made it this far...care to share your take?

  • The Ganges River represents the Hindu goddess Ganga, and it is believed that bathing in the holy water washes away sins and increases one’s chance of reaching Moksha, or enlightenment. The Ganges is also one of the most polluted rivers in the world, with over SIX billion liters of raw sewage and industrial waste dumped in it every day, according to a new report by @reuters. In 2014 a study by several government health and environmental agencies revealed that fecal contamination had led to the spread an antibiotic-resident bacteria, yet half a billion people still rely on the Ganges for everything from bathing to drinking water. Here, a young woman washes her hair just before the sun drops in the riverside city of Varanasi, and right before I hopped on a small boat to witness the Aarti ceremony. Aarti is a nightly ritual in which the river goddess is put to sleep with singing and festivities, and it’s a popular tourist stop. India is an incredible country rich with art and history, but it is impossible to visit and not observe the pollution and poverty — and feel compelled to speak up about it. As an employed, middle-class American, I realize I come from a place of great privilege, but I also have the tools in my box to help. I use this platform to speak up about plastic pollution and conservation of wildlife (and I consider myself to be very educated on those topics), but I must admit, I’m a bit in the dark on clean water initiatives. I’ve heard of @water and @charitywater, and I’m familiar with the work @lifestraw and @sawyerproducts have done in developing nations, but that’s about it. If we can give a photo of an egg 50 million likes on Instagram, I think we can bounce around a few ideas about access to clean water and removing pollutants from oceans, rivers and lakes…right? I’m not sure what the next war will be, but in the final war, we will most certainly be fighting over the control of WATER.

  • Our Bodies are in a pre-Christmas rush, but our minds are still on Sri Lankan train rides ✨.
↠
Is it just us or does it still not feel like Christmas time 🎄?! Maybe it’s being back in Australia, or maybe it’s the fact this year has been crazy busy. Either way, today is a mad rush to sort out presents, food and sweets before Monday night/Tuesday! 😂.

Hope you’re better prepared than us! 💕

  • This Christmas, we want TPC to be a light in the Southern Suburbs - literally. So we are inviting everybody to bring any working lights/batteries and put them in the designated place at the Foyer this Sunday and next Sunday. The vision is to create an inviting lit-up building for this Christmas so people can come in and meet the Light of the World!

  • They laugh at me because I'm different.
I laugh at them because they are all the same. Be bold, be your unique self!

You were created as a unique individual and are special in your own way! There is no reason to try to change that and be like everyone else.
One of the biggest addictions in our society is approval addiction. People are concerned with who has the most likes, followers, friends on social media, who is the most popular, all this leads to seeking  the approval of others.
The reality is no one is thinking about you because they are too busy thinking about themselves. So quit worrying what the world thinks of you and start being yourself and loving yourself the way you are, while striving to get better!

If you desire to make a difference in the world, you must be different from the world! Get out there and let the world know who you really are.

Tag someone and tell them what makes them unique and special 👇🏻

  • Vision isn’t merely what you’re doing. Vision answers the question “WHY are we doing this?” It’s the “why” behind the “what.” Vision is the “so what.” It’s the reason we do what we do.

And people forget. As soon as you say it again, they remember they’ve known it. But they forgot. Maybe only briefly, but they forgot. And they’ll forget again.

And so will you. Deadlines blur the why. Endless meetings obscure it. Pace risks leaving it behind.

So get clear on your WHY. Why is it you’re doing what you’re doing? State it. Clearly. Then say it again. And again. And again.. * Include it in email communication.
* Say it as you start meetings.
* Bring it up in hallway conversations.
* Visualize it with videos.
* Tell stories. Lots of stories.
* Point it out in someone when you see it.
* Keep it simple.
* Write it out for yourself.
* Find new ways to say it.

Just when you think you've said it enough, say it again.

  • Sam, Kiran, & Stefanie: “I’ll probably be going to the UK again when I finish year 12. I’m looking forward to go see my extended family in the UK… I’m also really looking forward to the holidays… It’s so much nicer weather than the last holidays. I feel like when it’s really sunny and warm it forces you to be more social. I can hang out with people and I can do stuff."
-
“Next week I’m going to Pakistan. I’m excited because my dad works there now and we’re going to go hike a mountain… I’ve never been to Pakistan. My dad was working in Vietnam for four years. So, I’d travel to see him every term. And from there we’d go to different countries. And it was really fun and I can’t wait.”
-
“For me, I don’t really plan things ahead, in the short term… During my gap year I might go back to the Philippines because that’s where most of my family lives. I’m really close with only a few people in my family, but someone I’m really close with is my grandma. She raised me up in my younger years. She’s the one person that keeps me grounded.”

  • Here is an amazing Thank you letter from the principal of one of the schools we helped.

Dear Ben,
I can’t tell you how delightful it was to return to my school on Monday morning and see the great job you and your volunteers had done in rejuvenating our memorial garden!
The clearing of the old and planting of the new plants has made a world of difference to the aesthetic. However, I believe, the sentiment is what has touched my heart.
Whilst, the garden is a special place it has been difficult to give it the attention it deserves in the busy life of a school. Teaching and learning is our focus but I know that ensuring the school looks inviting and loved is just as important.
So I would like to thank you and your volunteers for supporting us in this way, making a genuine difference to our school and showing the students that you care.
I am very grateful.”
.
Thank you again to everyone who made this day happen for our amazing volunteers to our financial supporters. You are all appreciated so much.

  • My Partner Leti is currently on an unpaid leave of absence, so she could travel to Mexico to be with her dying mother. Her mother passed yesterday, rest her soul. I have started a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of her insurance and travel costs. Her father died just a few weeks ago as well, so we want to lighten any burden we can for Leti and her family. Leti is one of the kindest souls I have ever known and she truly deserves this. Please share and donate if you are able to. Link will be in my bio. Thank you all. ❤️ @central_market #fortworth #gofundme #becausepeoplematter

  • Sebastian: “More or less likely, the one out. Although my friend group is here, I feel like I am that one person that is kind of ignored or kind of not thought about a lot. I don’t know if that’s actually what is going on, but I just feel like that at times. For me, my family life is going downhill. So as of yesterday, so pretty recent, mum and dad split up...
-
So many things are going around in the world, it’s just like you don’t stop to think about the problems that are going around in people’s lives that are right next to you. No one is perfect. Everyone is imperfect in some way, form, or shape. From home life to personal self. I feel like you don’t actually know someone until you’ve been in their shoes, been in their house - lived with them. Then you know who they are.”

  • Over the past couple years I’ve been honored to coach business executives seeking fresh opportunities; women stepping into new leadership roles; empty nest parents launching new dreams; church staff maximizing strengths and young leaders demonstrating their value.

I’ve also had conversations with individuals who, frankly, were not able to fund the coaching they desired. Not every church is able to allocate budget dollars to help a ministry director sharpen their focus. I’m aware of single moms who’ve hit bottom and are climbing hard into a next season, but lack the resources to develop a plan.

Maybe you have a heart for church staff, for ministry directors, for pastors to live fully into their sense of calling and purpose. Perhaps you’re eager to help a mom who wants to leave public assistance programs and live a proud, self-sustaining life.

Are you ready to pass it on? Will you invest in the life of someone else?

DM me or email me: mark@becausepeoplematter.com

Let’s talk about how your step can give life to someone else’s next step.

⠀
We will have the last Next Steps session for 2019 on the 1st of December. Hope to see you there! ⠀
