Flourish motto number FOUR ✨ Watch your weight. Not on the scale 😂 but on your letter lines vs. flourish lines.
Listen, I realize this is more of a personal motto but I like to keep my flourish weight LIGHTER than my letter weight. Sometimes I don’t even put any weight on flourishes. By this I mean, the shades (or thicker parts) of your flourishes should be lighter/thinner than the shades in your letters. Note the flourish weight on w, g, and t.
This is mostly about keeping focus on the word. After all, that’s what you want people to read, right?
Another purpose of this is for visual interest. When you vary weight in your piece, it gives a subtle secondary interest to the readers’ eyes, similar to seeing a second colour on the page.

Flourish motto number 3: avoid hot spots and what I like to call warm spots!
Hot spots are where lines touch tangentially (in other words, not an intersection where there is a clear angle made by two lines). In most cases, hot spots confuse our little human brains as to where the line direction is going. Take the left ‘yay’ as example, it’s almost as if I wrote an X on the bottom, right? When the brain sees potential alternatives to understanding the lines, very simply... it’s bothered. Therefore it’s not very pleasing to the eye.
Warm spots (yes, I totally made this up but go with me here) are where lines get too close to each other that they are on the verge of becoming a hot spot. In some ways they’re even more displeasing to look at than hot spots. When lines get too close they look crowded and squished, and therefore look haphazard and messy.
Instead ✨ try opening up flourish lines where you anticipate them to touch or come close. Stretch open loops where appropriate, and even take the opportunity to break your stroke. This can sometimes create dimension, and liveliness! In the right ‘yay’ it’s almost as if the first y is stacked on top of the second y, right?

anyone else as bad as i am about sending thank you cards?? 🤦🏼♀️ the act of sending mail for me is torture which is pretty shocking as what i do for a living revolves around things that go in the mail 😂 so i am making a vow to create a cute little area with a cute little box set of cute little notecards and letter accoutrements this season so there’s NO reason (except my laziness) not to send them this year. i was gonna say it’s my resolution... but i hate those and i really don’t want to be that person who starts talking about them already 😬🙄
Trying a different style video with some music! What do you think?
I used the @fabercastellusa Pitt Artist White Brush Pen as a base then blended the @pentelofamerica Sparkle Pop Pens in pink and silver! I love these pens, they are so glittery but sadly the video doesn’t do justice to the amount of glitter there is. ✨
This Advent I’ve been thinking about these Advent words a lot. ✨
HOPE - Jesus is our hope. Jesus is why we have hope. We have hope in the promised Savior.
LOVE - God is love. I pray that we love the way God truly loved us. Let’s love the ones who are hard to love.
JOY - My joy is not in anything or anyone but in Christ Jesus. My joy is not fragile because my joy is Christ.
PEACE - He is the prince of peace. He’s peace surpasses understanding. Peace is not the absence of something filled but resting Christ.
Turn to Christ he is our hope, our love, our joy and our peace. Advent is an adventure in knowing Christ.

I remember listening to this song in my childhood from an old cassette on the tape recorder (does anyone remember those? I used to enjoy winding the cassette with a pencil if the reel got loose😁) . .
It was from a set of Christmas carols for kids, so this song was called "Good Christian Kids Rejoice", a variant of the song ""In dulci jubilo" (Latin for "In sweet rejoicing"), which is a traditional Christmas carol. In its original setting, the carol is a macaronic text of German and Latin dating from the Middle Ages. Subsequent translations into English, such as J. M. Neale's arrangement "Good Christian Men, Rejoice" have increased its popularity, and Robert Pearsall's 1837 macaronic translation is a mainstay of the Christmas Nine Lessons and Carols repertoire."
(Content in quotes is from Wikipedia)
I'm also sharing lyrics of the 2nd and 3rd stanzas:
"Good Christian kids, rejoice,
With heart and soul, and voice;
Now ye hear of endless bliss:
Jesus Christ was born for this!
He hath opened the heavenly door,
And man is blessed evermore.
Christ was born for this!
Lately I’ve been really trying to up my hand lettering skills in regards to script. I’ve gotten so comfortable in hand lettering doing everything BUT script, actually hand lettering is probably my favorite thing to do when designing (or maybe ever). I’ve really put off learning this sort of brush style script for so long because honestly... it’s just really intimidating to me!
So, here we have my first real attempt (also the first one I’ve finished all the way through) of brush script hand lettering.
These are some VERY basic tips I picked up while finishing this piece:
1. Down ⬇️ strokes should always be the thickest part of the letter.
2. Up ⬆️ or sideways ➡️ strokes should always be thinner than the downward strokes.
3. The thicker your downward strokes and the thinner your upward stokes are will be what gives the letters the most contrast.
4. Be as loose as possible with your hand movements to get really good “swishes and swoops”. <—— this was by far the hardest thing for me to do. I’m so used to using grids and being so technical with other types of letterforms. Letting go of that was super tough!
Hopefully these very basic tips will help out another brush script newbie like me!
I don’t plan to go very in depth with brush script. Hand lettering serifs and san serif typefaces for logos and things of that nature will always be where my passion and attention is. BUUUUT this has been something fun I’ve been practicing here and there in my free time.
Open Design Course ◀6/6▶
▪️The Open Design Course began in 2016 by the initiative of Bram Crevits, trying to formulate an answer to some urgent needs: but mainly as a way to offer support for an unseen influx of people fleeing war and seeking refuge in Europe. Due to regulations of higher education it is almost impossible for most of the newcomers to start or to continue their studies as ‘regular students’ within the Belgian education system.
▪️ @opendesignc initiative is intended to create a space within KASK @schoolofartsgent (The Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Conservatory constitute the School of Arts of University College Ghent,Belgium) where it is possible to bypass the technical/administrative restrictions, to welcome refugees and asylum seekers and provide them with a high-quality learning context.

🎄🎶The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear🎶🎄
Elf just never gets old, no matter how many times I watch it🎄
A few weeks ago we went to our city’s Christmas tree lighting. There was hot chocolate, singing, and of course the tree lighting🎄
My son wasn’t singing and I busted out a quote from this movie and told him that he needed to sing in order for Santa’s sleigh to fly😂

Some days when i feel like i made a mistake at work, i cant help but just keep spiralling and thinking about all my mistakes and what could have been - what if i missed something crucial out, what if i pissed the counter party off, what if i didn't raise my voice, what if i was calmer, what if i could have controlled my temper better, what if i pre-empted them of this first; and i start thinking of all the the worst case scenarios - what if i scuttled the deal, what if my clients decide to sue me, what if i derailed the negotiation process, ad infinitum. First opened to this verse to throw at my husband who was worrying about his exam results but i guess i am the one who actually needs it for today/night.
(this) one decision can change your life forever. 🤯
Already talked about that alot, but it's still crazy .. _
For this lettering, I used a technique that I haven't used a long time! I wrote it by hand on paper, scanned it, edited in Photoshop, added this color halftone, print it out and went back to adding details with the pen ✌️ really Interesting to mix these two world - mix it up 😉
