  • Nothing facilitates formation of amazing foliage like a lack of frost. Then, there’s no downside for a given plant to invest in foliage that is, say, gigantic, complex, or extra-sturdy in construction: That “investment” may well remain productively photosynthesizing for months or even years; in a temperate climate, its functional lifespan may be just a few months.

Here, the glorious palmate leaves of a block of young papayas at the MARC House Plant Store here in Key West. .
.
The trees grow with scary rapidity, retaining leaves only at the tip of the trunk. So, a single papaya is a gawky & lonely thing—not least because the species is dioecious and, so, there needs to be a male nearby to pollinate the females. Plant papayas in groups, spacing each about five feet from its other littermates. If your group is five or more, chances are you’ll have that necessary male among them. (Because papayas are propagated by seed—and grow extremely quickly—I’m not aware of sources selling sexed plants.)
.
.
In just a few years, the trees will have become too tall to pick from without using a ladder. No problem! Either saw them down to a foot & let them resprout, or remove overly-mature individuals & replant with youngsters.
.
.
In look as well as taste, papayas can be delicious!

  • Our last garden makeover of 2019. Hard landscaping and planting all finished. Just the raised bed sleeper posts to be cut down to size. The landscapers have had a right battle with the amount of rain we have had this Autumn and the site has been very waterlogged and muddy. Land drainage has been installed under the lawn to help mitigate waterlogging.

  • Still playing catch up with the old #botanicaladvent calendar... G is for garden, gardening and goals.
.
Having stripped our plot to its bare bones after ten years of getting to know each and every nook and cranny, what flourishes best where, and develop a suite of favourite plants it’s time to start planning that dream garden complete with a working cut flower patch, a physic herb garden and more evergreen shrubs, grasses, swathes of colour and woodland understory.
.
This beautiful shot of Chinese meadow (Thalictrum delavayi) taken by landscape designer @miriaharris in one of her London gardens has stolen our hearts!
.
Miria kindly contributed some planting suggestions to chapter 3: Growing and Gathering of the Botanical Bible including Planting for Inspiratjon, Wellbeing, Style, Biodiversity and Pollinators. Her gardens are similarly thoughtful, intuitively in sync with nature and beautifully curated - check out her IG for lovely still and moving snapshots of her gardens throughout the year.
.
Suitably inspired, we’re off to make a garden goals wish list and ask Santa for some seeds, spring plant promises and maybe a few gardening books... the updated Planting the Natural Garden by Piet Outdolf (Timber Press, 2019) for one 🌸

  • Good morning Gardening Friends! Today I am sharing with you a little success story. Last December I brought this myrtle topiary into the house for winter. It looked great at first but then struggled and by the time I took it back outside all limbs were dead. I felt little hope for it’s recovery. However you know how I like to experiment! I trimmed all the branches off except two that had one leaf each on it. I trimmed those back to the leaf. I sat it in morning sun on my topiary table on the patio and began a regiment of diluted fish and watched the soil moisture carefully. Guess what? This is it a year later!! It is actually prettier than it was before. And, she is staying outside this winter unless I see temps dropping below 40 degrees. Then I will move them to a place with a little more shelter. Gardening is an experiment peeps, and I am a firm believer that if the roots of a plant are still viable there is a chance of recovery.
