  • Strawberry season may seem a long ways off but there are things you can do now to ensure a bumper harvest:
1. Spread a mulch of compost or composted manure over the soil near your strawberry plants. Or in the area you're planning on planting them.
2. If you have an established patch, leave the old foliage on to protect the plants' crowns from snow and frost. Tidy it up later in late winter to early spring.
3. ID any plants that are three years old or older. Remove them and plan to plant new plants in their place. Older strawberry plants produce a lot less berries than younger ones.
4. Order and plant bare-root strawberry plants. They're cheaper than potted plants and get planted in the winter, just as long as the soil isn't frozen. Here in Britain you can plant them pretty much from now until early March. In colder regions, wait until the soil is work-able but get them in before early April.
5. Make sure to get a mix of June bearing, ever-bearing, and day neutral strawberry varieties. That way you'll have berries from June to September.
6. If you're expecting a lot of snow, completely cover your strawberry bed with straw, dried leaves, or another dry mulch. I've seen this tactic keep strawberry plants alive through the winter as far north as Scandinavia. Remove it in early spring.

Any tips of your own? 🍓

  • Blend? Vino rosato?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
🇬🇧 Blend? Rosé wine? What's going on in this vintage?! 😅👇🏼🍇
Nothing serious: it is simply part of the winemaking tradition of a time in the area and a predominantly artisanal production 👇🏼
In this small winery the harvest took place in vineyards of over 30 years, in these times on 4000 plants of white grapes chosen for one hectare could happen that there were 200 red grapes for the little attention paid by the supplier 🍇
Today this isn't common, but at the time they say it was very common: so in these hectares everything is harvested together considering that even the red grapes will make a white wine so they will not have repercussions on the aromas and flavors of the final wine 👌🏼🍾🥂

🍏

  • #Didyouknow that catfish are not to be fed for a minimum of 24 hours before the harvest day. They are likely to vomit undigested food, which would pollute the water in the container during transportation, hence, increasing the risk of mortality.

  • I came upon the saddest cabbage on my daily field walk.
.
Was it intentionally left behind by the crew during the last harvest? Did it roll off the harvest wagon in an attempt to escape its fate?
.
It is possible that if I brought this cabbage inside, I could let it thaw and I might get a half decent meal out of it. (Probably something cooked - I'm going to bet this cabbage is not fit for coleslaw.)
.
But I will never know.
.
I pulled back my leg and saw how far I could kick it.
