Every time I feel myself getting a bit stressed or overwhelmed or those muscles in my body tensing up... these are the things I turn to daily to reset and refocus on what the holidays should really be about!

  • ✽ Today on the blog, I'm sharing 5 Things I'm Letting Go of This Holiday Season (link in bio!) ✽ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each year around this time... I get this surge of energy + anxiety to wrap things up for the year and plan ahead for the new year. I feel powered on 🔌⚡️ to get shiz done, but I also tend to skew on the side of feelin’ overwhelmed. Who gets me? This year, however, I’m approaching the holiday season a bit differently.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As my wedding is quickly approaching, I’ve been working smarter, so I can take about a month off from work to truly enjoy this exciting milestone in my life. That means being very, very intentional about who and what gets my attention and saying ‘no’ to any additional projects that have a deadline between now and my February wedding.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition to simplifying my workload, I’m simplifying my mindset for the holidays. 🧠That pressure to “do all the things” and buy all the things… I’m letting that go. It’s a beautiful time of year that often gets stressful real quick when we lose sight of what it’s really about. While this time of year certainly looks different for everyone, at its core, it’s all about gratitude + togetherness.

So, join me in simplifying the holidays by makin’ space for what really matters and showing up for yourself in the same way you show up for others.

Tis the season for candy corn and candy pumpkins🎃, am I right?!👻They’re just too fun, colorful and seasonal to not buy!🤩⠀

Every holiday season I am so thankful for where I am today with my relationship with food🙏. October, November and December, the months that are supposed to bring about joy and family nostalgia, instead brought me anxiety and stress😣. I had a perfect eating routine I HAD to stick to, and if I ate something like ONE little morsel of candy pumpkin😱, I would throw in the towel, call the day a failure and eat all the foods🍟🍰🍔. I remember my worst holiday season 11 years ago like it was yesterday because that’s much I let my relationship with food tear me down and pull me away from being present and simply enjoying life💔. I was compulsive around sweets and felt like I blacked out many times after eating LOTS of baked cookies, buckeyes and chocolate covered pretzels to name a few. This honestly was horrible and I felt stuck in my restrict/binge cycle while engaging in compensatory behaviors that exhausted me.😓 ⠀

As the holiday seasons progressed and each year I saw myself wasting precious time and memories with friends and family, I knew I HAD to make a change, STAT☝️. I began to challenge all the beliefs I had around food and my body. I asked myself questions like… “Is there really a perfect way to eat?”, “Do I see myself living the way I’m living now in 5 years? How about in 10? What about when I have kids?”, “What’s the WORST thing that will happen if I sit down to purposefully enjoy a cookie?!”🤔All of these questions caused me to really think and make that decision to build a future I could feel proud of and happy to live in❤️.And let me tell you - the road is challenging, but it’s oh so worth it and something I help my clients navigate so they too can find food freedom and enjoy their holiday season.🎉⠀

  • What stresses you out about the holidays? Family? Indulgent food? Travel? Money? I’m writing an upcoming holiday blog post, including several free guided meditations for holiday stressors. .

For me, the holidays are a time to put aside all the shit (for lack of a better term) and enjoy yourself. For some of my extended family, it’s a time to bring up the past. I can’t lie, the past is a big trigger! Honestly, my biggest trigger is when my mom brings up how wonderful of a mother she was with stories that aren’t even true, but I’ve heard her tell them so long that even she thinks they’re 100% true. And if I insert any details (truth) it becomes a fiasco. How she appears to everyone else is the most important thing to her. .

This will be the first year I am not attending or inviting any extended family. My husband and I marveled at the idea when it first came to us. I said, “I just can’t do my mom and aunt this year. What about your mom and brother?” He didn’t look excited. He just shrugged his shoulders. Ok, maybe not. “What about just us...you and I and the kids?!” We both smiled. That sounded perfect for us! What a relief I’ve been feeling. Even the kids liked the idea because instead of catering to everyone else, watching mom and dad stress out, we could give them attention and do things our way! .

  • We’re about a week out from Thanksgiving, and all the fun if it. For me, that means hosting several dinners, out of town family coming home, finishing the decorating (if I can squeeze it in), catching up on outstanding orders, and keeping a close tab on inventory levels of fabric and ribbon as the post holiday sales loom. Lines blur this time of year as I try to balance work and life. I love my job. I love my family. I love my customers. I tend to give everything I have to all of the above, and this leaves me with little for myself. Reminding myself that I’m worth taking a small break for is necessary. Whether that’s a longer lunch than snacking on anything handy while I let the dogs out, or spending an hour with family in the evening, I need to be intentional. (We’re all workaholics here, and don’t watch tv, so all our evenings are filled with projects and activities. It’s not just me with that lack of family time). Anyway, I’m reminding myself, and you, to focus on what’s important this holiday season. And don’t forget yourself in that focus. You’re worth it.

  • Shout out to anyone whose had to cut out a toxic family member from thier lives 🖤  It's probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I'm trying my best to stay present and grounded. Especially now that the holidays are here. I can't help but feel anxious and sad though... The holidays were always so cheerful and exciting. Now I'm dreading them and I feel sad... This is the first time without this person in my life. I had to leave the relationship because it was just way too stressful and it effected my ability to grow and heal. It actually made me backtrack... It truly sucks having to walk away from someone you love. I'm just trying to remind myself it's not selfish to grow apart. It's not selfish to need space. It's not selfish to be angry or sad and have feelings. It's not selfish to walk away from things that derail my healing. It's just so hard to feel my damn feelings when they're so painful. I'm trying so hard not to stress but I'm also trying to give myself permission to feel this shit...

First you have to set realistic expectations about the holidays. You might be saying, but hey Laura,  I want my house to look like Martha Stewart showed up and randomly decided to decorate! I want that too but I’ve also learned more than likely my house is lived in and is not  going to look like a perfectly photoshopped everything matching magazine cover. Because my mind is constantly racing, telling me that “the list in my head” has to be done

  • 🎶Its the most STRESSFUL time of the year? 🎶  It doesn't have to be! Take a couple tips about how to do more than 'survive' this holiday season. Here are four things you can do to make sure you're being your best self when times (like the holidays) get stressful.

1. Anticipate your feelings and ask for help. Many years ago, I remember driving to my parents house for a holiday. Going there was always stressful for me, for one reason or another. And this particular year, I spent time before I went, acknowledging that I could feel very stressed out, anticipating things that might 'set me off.' And then? I asked for help -- from my counselor and friends -- on things I could do to overcome those stressful moments.

2. Plan Your Coping/Stress Management Strategy. Listen, its true: if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Create a strategy of what you're going to do during the stressful situation. Are you going to meditate extra? Count to 10 before you respond? Make sure you're well-hydrated and rested?  I think that its important to make sure to nourish yourself so you can respond as your best self.

3. Visualize and Be Congruent with Your Best Self. Speaking of your best self: would your best self be THAT stressed over a bitchy response or a screaming kid? No? Be that best version of you. Try to imagine what your role model would do, and imitate that! Visualize you handling the situations well, and practice those visualizations often before you're in the stressful situations.

4. Connect with friends often. Get yourself filled up with love and support before and after your stressful events. It will help refill your battery and love sources.

  • I propped my head against the plane window, planning to doze off quickly. The couple next to me plotted about how much they could drink on the two-hour flight.

It occurred to me that this was part of their travel routine...perhaps a glass of wine at the airport lounge & a mini-bottle or two in-flight. I'd never been much of an airport drinker, but I know it's second-nature for some.

The wife muttered about a family member she’d lost patience with. She needed her first cocktail, stat.

The situation became suddenly familiar....& a scene I imagine many of you will witness or participate in over the coming weeks. Maybe it's having a cocktail to soothe your nerves, help pass the time, or to treat yourself while on the road. Perhaps it's a drink to relieve the tension of a family member that irks you. Whatever reason; this ritual is not uncommon...especially during the holidays when anxiety and tensions can be rather high.

  • We all have that one relative that gets under our skin. We all have triggers that cause us stress and anxiety. Before entering these situations that may cause us strife, focus on how you want things to go.

Meditate on the event. Visualize it going well. Close your eyes, breathe deeply and paint a picture in your mind’s eye

How do you want to feel?
How do you want your interactions to go?
What kind of vibes do you want to radiate to others?
What sort of vibes do you want to receive?
Embody the feeling of ease and flow.

We get that which we focus on. If we think “This is going to be a terrible experience” then that’s exactly what we’re going to get. If we go in with the mindset “Whatever happens is going to be great and exactly what needs to happen” then all will be well.

Try some affirmations before and during:

I am calm
I am grounded
I am at peace
I am confident
I am secure
Everything comes to me as it should
My interactions are positive
I am open to listen and learn
I have my own path and other’s have theirs

You can also visualize a protective bubble around you to protect you from any negative vibrations. I wrote a meditation on it for @mindbodygreen let me know if you'd like the link and I'll get it to you!

Each year around this time... I get this surge of energy + anxiety to wrap things up for the year and plan ahead for the new year. I feel powered on 🔌⚡️ to get shiz done, but I also tend to skew on the side of feelin’ overwhelmed. Who gets me? This year, however, I’m approaching the holiday season a bit differently.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As my wedding is quickly approaching, I’ve been working smarter, so I can take about a month off from work to truly enjoy this exciting milestone in my life. That means being very, very intentional about who and what gets my attention and saying ‘no’ to any additional projects that have a deadline between now and my February wedding.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In addition to simplifying my workload, I’m simplifying my mindset for the holidays. 🧠That pressure to “do all the things” and buy all the things… I’m letting that go. It’s a beautiful time of year that often gets stressful real quick when we lose sight of what it’s really about. While this time of year certainly looks different for everyone, at its core, it’s all about gratitude + togetherness.

They are doing it right, living their best life. But are they? We often assume people have all the money because they have the things we want. Those two don’t always correlate. 🤯 And yeah, the comparison game is real.

A few years ago I bought holiday chargers because I thought I had to make the holiday vibe just right for dinner with friends. At the time I didn’t know what a charger even was but I saw it on the internet and suddenly needed 8 in corresponding colors to match my decor. 🤦🏼‍♀️ If you don’t know what a charger is, it’s a bigger plate that sits under your real plate that you can’t eat off of and generally serves no purpose other than a color pop. In my case, the holiday design I picked would only look nice 2 months out of the year and now they live in the closet.

The #intentionalholidays tip today is not to purchase a ton of decor items to get that holiday vibe.

  • Navigating the holiday season can be tricky! Especially if you're trying to keep up with your healthy habits.⁠⠀

I talked all about this in more detail in last week's IGTV, but here are my top tips that I'm always trying to implement!⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨Meal plan & prep ahead on the weekend. While I go on about meal planning a lot, I don't necessarily do it every week. But it is KEY for surviving these busy periods!⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨ Bring a homemade packed lunch. Not only will you probably save money and cut down on food waste, but you'll be making sure to get a nutrient-dense lunch in before any evening activities.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨ Front-load your nutrition: get lots of veggies & protein in early in the day, since these will likely be lacking if you're out for dinner.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨ Don't deny yourself some indulgences! If you're out at a party, start off with the "healthier" fare, but definitely still go for those indulgences as well. This way you're less likely to go overboard. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨ Swap out a couple alcoholic drinks for some non-alcoholic cocktails. (I bet most people won't notice, and you'll thank yourself in the morning!)⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨ Prioritize sleep! Even if it comes at the expense of something like exercise, this is a period of the year where this swap is worth it.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨ Know your non-negotiables for managing stress, and keep up with some form of self-care.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
✨ Practise saying no when needed. Recognize your limits or propose alternatives when certain requests are just too much.⁠⠀

In her article, Jane Borden (2017) states, “While we’d love everyone to be on their best behavior during the season of peace and joy, all that togetherness can bring out their worst.”

She discusses how to deal by suggesting four tactics:
•
“1.) Plan to protect yourself- while you can’t control the negative things that family members may say, you can decide how you’ll respond...jot down a list of annoying things you anticipate...then they won’t surprise you and going with the flow will be easier;
•
2.) Limit your time together- especially because of #1, set your boundaries...and if people cross them, making you feel uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to take a break from them to visit some nearby friends or sights;
•
3.) Spread the love- in families of divorced parents, it’s important to try to divvy up the time...even if it’s not realistic to split the time 50-50, be sure to let each side know how you will plan quality time and stick to it; and
•
4.) Meet in the middle- in order to be on neutral ground, so people won’t be as comfortable with falling into their old annoying  toxic roles, this author suggests choosing a resort halfway between everyone’s houses.” If that’s not possible, many places offer prepared holiday dinners for large groups of people. This way, you’re in and out. The bottom line is that we can’t control or predict the behavior of family members who stress us out, but we can be better-prepared with our personal plan of action. I'm hovering at about a 5. 🤨

Somehow this year's "extra" week before Thanksgiving is making things feel more intense. Our holiday prep is pretty minimal. We're not traveling this year. So what gives? ⠀
⠀
Being sure that I keep track of all of the details is wearing on me. ⠀
⠀
Not forgetting anyone important at my daughter and son's schools. The holiday drives - who needs what by when? The little niceties. My love/hate relationship with holiday cards. Managing my schedule so that I can be at many holiday events as possible at each of the kids' schools. Getting ahead on client work so that I can relax over the holidays. Pondering what affordable yet meaningful yet novel yet developmentally appropriate gifts to get the children. 🎁

I finally realized that I just needed to get the holiday to-dos out of my head and onto paper. Now it doesn't look or feel so bad. I know that not everything is going to get done, and I'm okay with that. I'm probably going to get a LOT go this year. And everything will be just fine. ⠀
