Does wine have to be certified Vegan in order to be considered vegan friendly? 🍷
Wine distributors will often tell our restaurant clients that they have no vegan wines available, but when we look at their list we see plenty.
In order for a wine to be vegan friendly, the refining agent used in processing the wine must be plant derived.
The most popular animal derived wine refining agents are:
❎ Gelatin 🐷
❎ Egg white 🥚
❎ Isinglass 🐠 (also known as fish bladder)
When labeling your wine list (yes, your wine list can be labeled too for the optimal vegan customer experience) ask your wine suppliers whether any of these products were used in the processing of their wines.
❗️Also note that even on the same vineyard, some varieties could be vegan friendly and others not.

One of the most important things to ask yourself when designing a vegan menu for your restaurant is...
Can my chefs and cooks create dishes that are better or at least just as good as what our vegan customers are eating at home?
If the answer is yes, then vegans will flock to your restaurant when they are too tired to cook, when they want to enjoy a night out with friends, or when your advertising speaks to them.
If the answer is no, then your menu will be a flop.

🌟 PRO TIP: You don’t have to create new flavors for your vegan dishes.
Many of your vegan customers were once your traditional customers.
They had a health challenge, or learned about animal agriculture’s contribution to climate change, or made the connection that if they wouldn’t eat their pet dog then they wouldn’t want to continue eating other animals either.
So they went vegan.
But that doesn’t mean they don’t still enjoy the taste of the dishes they know and love from your restaurant.
If the only vegan-friendly dishes on your menu are:
❌Grilled veggie platter
Then you are losing customers. This was the norm in 1999 but not in 2019.
Go ahead and use that:
✅ BBQ sauce that your ribs are seasoned in
✅ Creole sauce that you pour over your seafood
✅ Cajun seasoning you marinate your chicken in
🌱(Just check that there are no animal products used in these sauces and if there are, make an easy swap to a plant based alternative.)
These flavors are the reason your dishes are special to your customers.
The best vegan dishes will be recognizable as signature dishes that reflect the theme and flavors of you current traditional menu.
