We see fire hazards and trip and fall exposures and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), actually backs up some of these fears with statistics: -Electrical problems were factors in 32% of home Christmas tree structure fires.
-Twelve percent of home Christmas tree fires involved decorative lights.
-Candles started 7% of home Christmas tree structure fires.

'Tis the holiday season, and as insurance professionals, it's important to provide you with some safety tips that we can use ourselves and share with our insureds this holiday season. -Plan where your tree will be positioned. Make sure it is at least 3 ft away from any sources of heat. Try to position it near an outlet so that cords are not running long distances, and be sure not to block any exits paths in case of an emergency. -When buying a real tree, check for fresh, green needles. Do not buy a tree that is dry or dropping needles. When buying an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled as fire-retardant.
