🎵Look into the eyepiece of your microscope... Who grows you? Unfroze you? Who feeds you? Who needs you? Who's still culturin' hybridoma cells?🎶
--The Great Inoculation 😉
OK, so you might be of a certain age if you know David Byrne's The Great Intoxication from Look Into the Eyeball, the inspiration for this musical parody. The cells on slide 2, though, I can tell you about regardless of your generation. (100x magnification, sorry no scale bar but roughly 10 micrometer diameter cells.) These are special mouse cells that produce an antibody - otherwise called hybridoma cells. The antibody itself recognizes a cancer-associated molecule that my lab has been studying for years. Students in my @russcollege#OHIOChBE#OHIOBME engineering class will be purifying the antibody secreted into cell culture medium using affinity chromatography, then will test the isolated antibody in a flow cytometry experiment. That is, as long as the cells and the antibody pass our initial lab QC. Stay tuned.
