  • Went to the re-use it center to find some wood and left with recycled glass tiles and all the supplies needed to tile around our woodstove for only 10 dollars. It looks neat when the light catches the different colours of glass. Impulse buy at its finest👌🏼

  • It's good to look back to see how far you've come.
When we decided to buy a retired school bus and convert it into our tiny home on wheels I dont think we couldve imagined just how wonderfully, beautiful and crazy this lifestyle change would be. It has brought us so much joy, freedom, and happiness. The people we've met, life lessons learned, and the places we've explored, is something we will cherish forever. Here's to many more adventures to come!

  • Slab city - the so called "last free place in America". Driving down the dusty dirt road, away from civilization and into the wild desert. As some would say, it's all that remains of the wild west. We passed some tents, run down campers, ramshackle huts made from pallets and salvaged junk. Dirty dogs barked and ran along side the bus as we drove through the "town". We parked up by Low rd. (Loners on wheels). There's no running water here, and no electricity. We awoke early to roosters crowing and dogs fighting. We walked down to the local slab city Oasis where there's seating, coffee for a buck, more dogs, and residents playing guitar and singing. This place isn't for everyone. And we'd be lying if we didnt feel out of our comfort zones. But isn't that what this adventure is about? Yes theres drug addiction here. Yes there's garbage and rubbish everywhere but here's a community of people living without of mainstream society and its rules and expectations in the middle of the desert.
We were greeted with friendly gratings and heard "welcome to slab city" walking by everyone. We were invited inside peoples homes. We danced with strangers into the wee hours of the night to an old salvaged stereo. We were reminded how powerful human connection is, and inspired by the amazing talented residents of this last free place in America. Peace out slab city✌🏼 #tiedyeisnotdead

  • When we pulled up to our campsite at Bagby Hot Springs I saw some voodoo on the ground. Looked a bit closer and it was a ☮️ sign! It was my mission to get a photo of the bus with it 🖤

  • This is not the best photo but means so much to us! This was our first night in the #skoolie. I (Maria) cried when we clean up the bus and was ready to be functional. I said - I can't believe this is our home 🥰 -. Took time, research, a ton of videos, countless trips to #homedepot, #lowes, #walmart and piles of Amazon boxes. And after 2+ months we were finally ready to start our journey!

One thing we have been concerned about is insulating our windows and making sure they don’t form condensation, as that leads to rust and a mess of other issues.

We are hoping to be able to use the original windows. Let us know what you think!

Kept us both warm when we went boondocking a couple weekends ago. We highly recommend it! .

  • Tomorrow i have an early start for work then we are heading to Magic Kingdom so before the chaos commences, (and while things are quiet right now on the bus), I wanted to take a minute to publicly say Happy Birthday (it’s tomorrow) to this fine ass man right here! He’s aged deliciously like a fine wine, he’s the smartest man I’ve ever met, he goes along with my crazy ideas and turns them from just plans and dreams into completed goals, he is creative and artistic, he’s funny and so sexy, he makes me coffee in the mornings and helps me try to relax after long days, he accepts and loves me completely as myself, he encourages me to be a bad ass even when I sometimes forget I can, he gives me space when I need it and cuddles when I don’t, he’s a great dad to Lili and to Molly Higgins and Aiden Patrick and he tries to be an open-minded accepting person no matter what weirdo or freak flag flier I choose to befriend :) He’s pretty amazing, and I’m so glad I get to spend another of his birthdays with him as my husband and PIC. Kocham cie babe! #skoolieliving #skoolie #birthday #39 #studsofinstagram

  • We drove through hail and snow and finally arrived in the Mojave desert late at night. We awoke early with the sun to catch our first glimpse of the landscape around us. At first glance it looked like we were on a different planet. Sand and rock with no signs of life besides scattered trees resembling something from Dr. Seus. We stepped outside to explore this peculiar desert and walked through a rocky canyon. It started raining and we hurried back to shelter. Shortly after, that same dry canyon had turned into a rushing river. Birds, ground squirrels and hares appeared and the land was transformed. We've spent a few days now exploring Joshua Tree National park and enjoyed our stay but are excited for our next destination.

Opened up the coach and Switched out windows even though its freezing outside.
.
When you're living in your build you don't want to keep putting things off. But working around your living can get discouraging. And then work/employment can get in the way, too 🤭
.
With Christmas around the corner and entertaining extended family we hope to get more projects accomplished.
.
The push is on. We're working on walls and electrical in the master bedroom. .
What's your next project?

  • It finally happened!
. . .
My dad is a saint and finally got the bus unburied from the trench of mud it’s been stuck in for months 😳😂
. . .
It’s taken us over a year to get to this point, but we’re done taking things out of the bus and can finally start turning the interior of the bus into our tiny home. Up first is framing out all the walls followed by roughing in our electrical & plumbing.
. . .
This is the exciting and overwhelming part that I’ve been impatiently waiting for. There’s a huge learning curve when it comes to turning a school bus into your home, but we’re mostly learning that we couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

  • What do you all think of this color swatch for our accent colors in the bus? 😍🚌 .
The interior is going to be white, black, and wood! .
.
We’re thinking we want the couch cushions orange, the kitchen cabinets green, and we can’t decide the rest! Lol Maybe a throw pillow, rug, and blanket the other colors? 🤔 .
.
We love getting everyone’s opinion! ❤️

  • Out with the (not that) old and in with the new! Rio is getting a new ceiling. Our first attempt to make our own plank ceiling (left) flopped when the boards, which were self cut and didn’t interlock, left a little to be desired in appearance. They’re wavy and have gaps. It’s driven Jim nuts from the start; I tried to hide my annoyance in an attempt to live with it and avoid a “re-do” haha 😂 We finally broke down and decided to go with the real deal: bonafide cedar shiplap (right). If you’re building a skoolie, save yourself the hassle and learn from our idiocracy. Shiplap is the only way to go with a ceiling. Even Foster approves. 🙌🏼 #skooliebuild #skoolie #skoolieconversion #schoolbusconversion @skoolieconversion #skoolielife #skoolielove #skoolieliving #diy #shiplap #home #love

  • Thankful for an old school bus that's becoming something else entirely.
•
Thankful for a partner who can work minor (and quite a few major) miracles with a toolbox and his ingenuity.
•
Thankful for small changes - walls, outlets, water lines, shower faucets, and armrests.
•
Thankful for a tiny seed of a crazy, completely out-of-our-wheelhouse dream, and the joy of watching it slowly become a reality.
•
Thankful for this space to share all of the above, for friends and family and the community here that can always be counted on for encouragement and more than a little construction and conversion troubleshooting.
•
Happy Thanksgiving from Jolene's bus family to yours!

  • H A P P I N E S S • It is easy to get caught up in life and forget to actually live. Where your days just sort of blend together and your routine becomes monotonous. That life works for some, but scares Colin and I. We’re terrified of being confined with no room to grow. Too many dreams and too impulsive I suppose. Ironic how shifting from a beautiful home to a tiny school bus makes us feel more free. Like we can breathe. Like we have space to be ourselves and live out a life that we create, rather than a life that has been given to us by society. • Cheers to you and us finding our Happiness and all that comes with it. • 🌿
