• advanced coil project: opossum head •
this project was not, in fact, an armadillo/wolf head/coyote head/whale/crocodile/bathtub. everyone had their guesses as i built this monster but this marsupial is finally here! i've never been so proud of a project before. my ceramics teacher assigned this project with 2 guidelines:
1) create a coil structure at least 16" tall [i'm prettyyyy sure i made it]
&
2) choose a style outside of your comfort zone
•
for me, in regards to the latter, that meant going for a more abstracted design rather than a realistic/naturalistic design. i drew a blind contour [i.e. drawing without looking at your pencil/paper!] of an opposum in my sketchbook to figure out the shape of the vessel, and then i built from there. i decided to only include natural-looking elements that would make the animal most obviously recognizable [ears, teeth, nose] and allow the glazework to command the majority of the attention to the piece. inspiration will be detailed in a later post, but please enjoy these close-up videos! this project was undoubtedly the most challenging sculpture i have ever made, and definitely taught me a great deal about planning a large scale build. i feel incredibly elated knowing it's all done ♡

  • You guys, my students are INCREDIBLY TALENTED!!! This door was decorated completely by one of my 6th grade students. I showed him what I wanted and he created it. I am in awe and so so proud. I feel like crying every time I look at it. Way to go, JG! #6thgradeallstars

  • Audrey Parker is a BA student who created this piece in the #HarrySmithPrintShop under the tutelage of #JuliaSeko / each piece was hand brayed and arranged with finishing nails and red yarn / titled: The Boxes / about the whole series of work in display in the Lounge Gallery at #Nalanda she says / “The Hearth is a place where fires can burn and embers settle. Where sunlight is released and able to bring heat. The hearth is an incubator, a safe and comforting place to settle in for a time. The hearth is a home, where freedom can be found in the restrictions. We chose our boxes, and settle for their warmth. That is the beauty, and the curse of comfort zones.” #finalscountdown #studentart #comfortzones #redyarn #hearthandhome

  • Trio of Symbolic Birds
This digital painting is part of my medieval art history research project. I conducted research on the catacombs in Rome, and surprise, actually enjoyed writing the paper. In a Christian context, peacocks symbolize eternal life and quail symbolize life on earth. On a particular cubiculum ceiling that I studied, these birds are painted to allude to the faith of the deceased inhabitant of the cubiculum. Neat stuff.

  • This photograph of Bebe, titled Pensive, made it into the 2018 USI Juried Student Art Show! Digital photography is something that I just started this semester and I can’t believe my work has already made it this far. The show will be exhibited from April 1st through April 30th in the McCutchan Art Center on campus if anyone is interested in seeing it in person.
