Maybe I'll try some baked goods too. I don't eat too many sweets for health reasons (except during chanoyu), but I'd like to try making something sweet with houjicha and share it with friends and family.

Houjicha is my go-to low caffeine tea. It's made from older leaves, which on average contain less caffeine than newer leaves. It's a comforting brew I can drink in the evening and not be awake until the end of time.

  • Deep into the mountain in Xi Shuang Ban Na in Yun Nan Province, China, the mountain at elevation 2000m near Hui Min Zhen is one of the last places with ancient wild Pu Erh tea tree. The motorcycle ride took almost an hour from the village to reach the point where we weren’t able to ride anymore since it’s too steep and too dangerous. Even though I wasn’t feared for my safety, Mr. Zhong scared himself to death for my life. It took us another hour to hike to reach the ancient tea tree. The hardship or say the bitterness of life that tea farmers have to endure is just like the bitterness of tea, it’s there and it’s real. Often times people dislike bitterness, nonetheless, it really is a flavor that we have to learn to taste and appreciate with heart.

  • Earl Gray Milk Tea + blackberry and passion fruit bubbles + lychee jelly. I found Biju Bubble Tea Shop accidently while roaming Soho this summer. Bubble tea was not over-sugary and had just the right amount of toppings (okay, maybe lychee jelly was a little bit extra). Early Gray may seem boring but it made bubbles’ taste bolder. It costs approx. £5 with all those toppings. I can’t wait to visit London again and drink some boba tea at Biju 🥤🌺 #tea #teatime #teajourney #blog #teablog #bobatea #soho #london

  • Lipton Green Tea Orient: A moment to balance. Ingredients: Green Tea (89%), Flavouring, Spices (Anise, Cinnamon, Liquorice) (2%). It came in a regular teabag, nothing special. The taste was definitely refreshing and rich. Cinnamon was in the foreground and made the experience interesting and balanced without bringing the heaviness of regular winter tea 🍃☕️ #tea #greentea #lipton #teatime #teajourney #blog #teablog.

Drinking this tea of clarity tonight, and reading exceptionally clear #epistemology while listening to Mozart. Musing also, how a little humble albino leaf brought me to #Gongfucha - and started a love affair that keeps enthralling me day after day.

Everything engendered has a midwife, my love affair with tea no less. It also has its good witch:
Meet my #TeaMom - a Fujian lady from a Tie Guan Yin producing family, who started her own wholesale business many years ago and now owns a small, quaint, topsy-turvy witches’ den called #teashop in a little watertown outside Shanghai, called #QiBao.

My trip back to Shanghai in October was also my annual pilgrimage back to the origin of my #teaobsession, like certain fish species who return across vast oceans to the pool of their birth, my tea thirst has brought me back for the second year in a row to visit this wonderful lady who planted the seed of #tealove into my heart and onto my tongue.

My first #gongfutea session was at her teahouse, with my mom and uncle, drinking an Anji Bai Cha and a Lapsang Suchong from Tongmu. It was two years ago when my maternal grandmother passed away. These leaves captivated me - through the senses as well as through the soul. They gave me something that was clarity, comfort, pampering, and peace. They also gave me a peek into a beautiful and enticing world I had not paid attention to before, like a door in the wall left ajar, through which glimpses of a beautiful secret garden pull you in and the deeper you penetrate, the more wondrous this new world becomes, until you’ve lost your way and forgotten the time and forgotten the world.

I returned here to see my tea mom again, to drink her treasury of teas and converse with her like with a magician of Arthurian legends. She has two different kinds of customers. The everyday tea drinkers after standard teas for a reasonable (snd friendly) price - for whom tea is a staple and prices compared like for eggs. And a circle of fellow tea lovers with more demanding tastes, seeking adventure on the tongue.

  • 🍂In chanoyu we don't just make and serve tea. We become in tune with and aware of the seasons through our otemae. Because of this, I've been thinking about the seasons a lot. Autumn is finally here where I live. Our seasons change as they do, but with hesitance and volatility in these uncertain times. In my corner of the world, it has become more common for summer and its constant dry heat to leave us in a trail of fire come autumn. And autumn, winter, and spring have become a gamble for whether or not there will be enough rain. If there is enough, it often soaks through the earth, bloating the rivers and creeping into roads and towns. Our seasons change subtly here, but in those transitions, like all transitions, there is struggle.

Being aware of the seasons in this day and age is a complicated matter. But it doesn't mean we can't appreciate when the trappings of fall begin to appear: a gray sky, cool air, sycamores shedding their leaves, the scent of a coming rain. I'm especially excited for the day the rain will come.

Today I'm appreciating the seasonal changes I see around me, and welcoming autumn as it finally finds its way home.

I'm Haley. I'm a 24 year old graduate student studying art history. I'm based in Decatur, GA but I grew up in Anchorage, AK. I've started this account as I begin my venture into gongfu tea brewing and expanding my knowledge of tea.
✨MY TEA STORY:✨
I first tried tea when I was twelve. My mother gave me green tea with honey to soothe the symptoms of a cold. I didn't quite understand the flavor, but it intrigued me. Later I tried some more teas with my friends at school, and before long I was hooked. 😍

Throughout my teenage years I drank bagged tea multiple times a day. I enjoyed virtually every flavor and variety that I found. I loved tea so much that it became the topic of my college application essay. (Yes, somehow, I did get accepted!)

However, I had no concept of tea quality, nor awareness of loose leaf teas. That all changed once Anchorage opened its first (and only) Teavana storefront and I scored a summer job there during college. I became educated in loose leaf tea, learned the basics of Western brewing, and expanded my awareness of tea varieties. From then on I only purchased loose leaf tea.

For the past few years, I have had a very utilitarian relationship with tea. I have always been very frugal, so I tended to only purchase the most affordable (often supermarket! 😰) loose leaf teas. Since I drink it throughout the day, I didn't think much about the quality. Merely having a hot beverage was enough to keep me going.

But recently my eyes were completely opened through @mei_leaf's incredible YouTube channel. It has become clear to me that I've been missing out on a whole world of amazing teas that, in spite of my low budget as a grad student, is not actually beyond my reach. I've realized that I can nurture my love of tea into a real hobby and passion.

I'm currently awaiting a few shipments of new teas and teaware so that I can truly begin this journey, at which point I will begin posting more actively. Thanks for being here. 😊❤️

  • Did you know that tea leaves can be used to fetch water out in the wilderness? On the way to a puerh tea terrace in a remote Yunnan #puerh mountain area, we had to walk about an hour on a very narrow winding dirt road. We were thirsty, so the local farmer girl tought me how to use tea leaves to make a spoon to catch water. So clever and it just added a bit more fun to our #tea mountain hike. #puer #hiking #teajourney #chinesetea
