One of the reasons I moved to Vermont was the plethora of snow and cold! I adore it all and I love to train through both! The brisk air that wakes my lungs, the stinging breezes on my face, the snowcapped towers.… ALL OF IT! ❄️ As a runner, it’s especially important to be able to move outside during the shorter, darker days of winter when you have lots of early spring races on the schedule. 🥶 A lady watched me from her car while I put on my snowshoes and she was like WHAT ARE THOSE FANCY THINGS? I replied, they’re snowshoes for running! And she was like, WHAT? I didn’t even know those existed! And I was like, oh yeah, they DO, and they’re fantastic! ❄️ I only started snowshoeing/snowshoe running last year, because um, I didn’t need to do that when I lived in Georgia. I quickly grew to love it, because it allows me to run (albeit a little bit differently) in deep snow! I know, right???
So today I took my new @atlassnowshoes out for a run in our local Hubbard Park. My kit also includes the warmest, and VERY comfy fleece-backed Sundial Tights by Backcountry, fleece top by @fjallravenofficial and appropriately sporty sunnies by @vuarnetofficial. this photo was taken the day after Western States 2017
I had started listening to some running podcasts during my daily jog, and one particular podcast that I had begun to really get into was @trailrunnernation (and if you’ve ever listened to TRN, you know how much they LOVE western). i listened to them talk about this crazy race out in california, and decided to follow along with the race updates on twitter to try to understand what they were talking about. the day that i spent following along with the 2017 Western States, cheering for Jim (and getting bummed when he went off course), seeing Cat come out of nowhere and win the dang race, & witnessing the incredible community that has been built up around this race, lit a fire within me. i wanted to do that someday. i wanted to dream that someone like me could be capable of running 100 miles, just like those runners had.
fast forward 2.5 years and i’ve been given the chance to live that dream and run the race that captured my heart back in 2017. i am so so SO unbelievably grateful for this opportunity, and for all of the amazing people who have celebrated with me, sent me happy texts & DMs, and offered to come help support me on race day. i don’t have the words to properly express how excited i am for this journey ahead of me.
2019 was absolutely amazing, but 2020 is going to blow it out of the water 💥💥 #SeeYouInSquaw

I woke up feeling like some bones were out of place in my left foot. Not ideal for a day where I was hoping to get out trail running, but I just hoped once it was in a running shoe it would behave.
One of my goals living over here is to start pushing my endurance boundaries, I'm keen to find a limit to what I can run in a day. The terrain in Taranaki is hard and although Doc do a brilliant job, the wet warm weather means that they're fighting a losing battle against the undergrowth and soil.
I had planned to do around 22km today, but a later start than planned and rough terrain made progress slow and I called it a day once I'd lost the track and had to retrace my steps for a second time. ------
Back on white cliffs track the way to the beach was infinately more runnable than everything else I'd been on and it was a joy to stretch out my legs and switch off my brain for a km.
And the beach, what a beach. The tide was unwrapping it as I arrived, towering white cliffs, and inviting sea. I've barely been in the water since I got here, today was the day. I stripped off and entered the sea feeling thrilled that my first sea swim in Taranaki was a naked one, alone on a beautiful beach after a day alone on the trails. -------
Just after this (once dressed) as I was charging through some standing water on the beach the channel turned out to be much deeper than I originally thought and next thing I knew I was swimming again.. 🙈
Unfortunately in this process my right foot had an argument with a rock so dripping wet I meandered the remainder of the track back to the car where fortunately dry clothes awaited me!

A very happy and accomplished face believe it or not! I was meant to knock a mile off last weeks long run to get myself used to the mileage but because I ran faster than usual I added a mile ON by the end 😐
Carbs last night and a fantastic sleep meant I was tearing to get out the door at 530am and tear that pavement to pieces. At the halfway point I felt great and was convinced I could have tacked on another two miles if I had needed to. Playing it safe though, if I can avoid injury up to the marathon I’ll be stoked.
Have a mega day everyone, make wise decisions and keep your goals in your periphery 🤗
