Don’t underestimate the power of your speech. The logos is the sacred element of Western culture, which means that your capacity for speech is divine. It’s the thing that generates order out of chaos and then sometimes turns pathological order into chaos when it has to. Don’t underestimate the power of truth. There’s nothing more powerful.
On the idea of potential.
My new course, "Discovering Personality", is now available for pre-order with a 35% Black Friday discount at JordanBPeterson.com/personality (linked in bio). This 5-hour course is condensed from a semester-long university course on the widely-accepted "Big 5" model of personality. Complete with summary notes, transcripts, audio versions, an exclusive members-only discussion group and access to my personality assessment, it has everything you need to help you better understand yourself and others, and orient yourself properly in a complex world. I hope youll find this course helpful, and with any luck, I am planning on creating more courses in the future.
Notice when you are embarrassed or ashamed by something you say or do. That is an indication that you have transgressed against your own core values. Such feelings often manifest themselves, in their subtlest form, as a feeling of weakness or disunity, centered in the body, and accompanying the statement or action. You can teach yourself to attend to these feelings, to note what you are doing when they occur, and to stop doing or saying those things.
Why do we believe in the individual?
If you say no to your boss, or your spouse, or your mother, when it needs to be said, you transform yourself into someone who can say no when it needs to be said. If you say yes when no needs to be said, however, you transform yourself into someone who can only say yes, even when it is very clearly time to say no. You have to be willing to walk away when that is the right thing to do.
People who live under the tyranny of their super-ego are usually repressed. Understand Myself is a personality test that illuminates your understanding and appreciation of yourself and those around you. Link in bio. #understandmyself#personalitytest
You can use your own standards of judgement. You can rely on yourself for guidance. You dont have to adhere to some external, arbitrary code of behavior. Life is short, and you dont have time to figure it out on your own. The wisdom of the past was hard-earned, and your dead ancestors may have something useful to tell you. Their wisdom is in books, some of which you can find in my list of recommended books if youd like (jordanbpeterson.com/great-books)
You’re not going to get along with yourself, your family members, or society at large if you don’t treat people like they’re conscious, active agents.
You have the right to act in self-defense, and in the defense of others, when they require it. But you shouldnt go looking for trouble. Its far too easy to justify acting with resentment and hatred while telling yourself that you are merely defending what is right. Perhaps you are. But you’d better be sure about that or you will stir up some terrible variant of hell that will move rapidly beyond your control.
If you are truly honest and good (rather than naive, which people often mistake for virtuous), you have far more power than someone who is dishonest and bad. People are able to trust you, so you can have genuinely valuable relationships and partnerships. People seek you out for companionship and advice. Your head remains clear because youre not filling it with garbage.
How can you make good judgments? Learn as much as you can. Dont say things you dont mean. Dont write nonsense. Do not pass yourself off as something you are not. Try to fix what you can fix and dont meddle with what you dont understand. Practice this diligently for five years and like "magic", you will make good judgments.
From a conceptual perspective, the unconscious mind stores memories, some of which you can and some you cannot access. Both affect you. Explore your unconscious mind to better understand yourself. You must determine where you are going in your life because you cannot get there unless you move in that direction. Random wandering will not move you forward. It will instead disappoint and frustrate you and make you anxious and unhappy and hard to get along with (and then resentful, and then vengeful, and then worse). #goalsetting
So, listen, to yourself and to those with whom you are speaking. Your wisdom then consists not of the knowledge you already have, but the continual search for knowledge, which is the highest form of wisdom.
Dreams seem to play a part in how we filter information; we deeply encode that which was learned during the day and reduce that which is deemed unnecessary.
This is a message for Politicon attendees and speakers.
