  • Ice Ice Bison...⁣ ⁣ Winter is nearly here, and the air grows cooler and the days shorter. The natural tendency for many of us is to bundle up, hurry indoors out of the cold temperatures. Bison? Not so much. The wind blows their fur down against their body, creating an impenetrable layer of warmth. In fact, the coat of a bison is so thick and it insulates the bisons body so well, that in winter, the snow will land on the bison and not melt from the heat of the bisons body.⁣ ⁣ Image: Bison hanging out in falling snow at Wind Cave National Park. ⁣NPS/Turner ⁣ #findyourpark #nationalparkservice #bison #iceicebaby #natureupclose #southdakota #thisweekoninstagram

  • "The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.” - Patrick Star⁣ ⁣ You might think sea stars are an open book. Turns out they’re a little more complicated. For example, how do they eat? Well, the sea star pushes its stomach through its mouth and into a bivalves shell. It then digests the animal and slides its stomach back into its own body. Deep. ⁣Who’s hungry? ⁣ Image: Purple orchre stars and green sea anemones in a tidepool at Olympic National Park. • “Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.” – Abigail Adams⁣ ⁣ A doorway to history...From the sweet little farm at the foot of Penn’s Hill to the gentleman’s country estate at Peace field, Adams National Historical Park is the story of “heroes, statesman, philosophers … and learned women” whose ideas and actions helped to transform thirteen colonies into one united nation. The story encompasses five generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927) including two Presidents and First Ladies, three U.S. Ministers, historians, and writers. ⁣ ⁣ Established on December 9, 1946, the site includes: John Adams Birthplace, where 2nd U.S. President John Adams was born, and the John Quincy Adams Birthplace where his son John Quincy Adams, 6th U.S. President was born; the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family.⁣ ⁣ What other presidential homes have you visited? ⁣ ⁣ Image: Weathered doorway of the John Adams Birthplace in #Massachusetts.⁣ ⁣ #FindYourPark #OTD #nationalparkservice #johnadams #doorway #history #president

  • “Clark, Audreys frozen from the waist down.” - Ellen Griswold⁣ ⁣ All part of the experience! Well...almost. Thith Chrithmath season is fast approaching. Will you be visiting a national park this holiday? Where will you go? If it’s somewhere cold, be comfortable and confident when properly dressed. ⁣ ⁣ ❄️ Prepare for changing conditions by wearing clothes in several adjustable layers.⁣ ⁣ ❄️ Be sure your clothing includes a windproof, hooded outer layer with wool or other insulating garments underneath. ⁣ ⁣ ❄️ Synthetic or wool pants and long underwear will help to keep your legs warm and dry in deep snow. Wind or rain-pants are lightweight and provide extra warmth on windy days. ⁣ ⁣ ❄️ Synthetic or wool socks and gaiters over boots help to keep your feet warm and dry. ⁣ ⁣ ❄️ Wear gloves or wool mittens with removable, breathable shells to allow moisture to escape from sweaty hands.⁣ ⁣ ❄️Since you lose more heat through your head than any other part of your body, wear a balaclava or parka hood when you need maximum protection. ⁣ ⁣ ❄️ Sunglasses are a must for sunny days. High altitude sunlight reflected from snow is much more intense than at lower elevations; snow-blindness may occur if sunglasses are not worn. ⁣ ⁣ ❄️ Apply sunscreen lotion to exposed skin to avoid sunburn.⁣ ⁣ NPS Image: Snowdrifts in a spruce forest at Noatak National Preserve, Alaska.⁣ ⁣ #FindYourPark #nationalparkservice #snow #frozen #alaska

  • I came. I saw. I made it awkward...⁣ ⁣ Umm...hey there. Often mistaken for a wolf, the coyote is about one- third the wolf’s size with a slighter build. Its coat colors range from tan to buff, sometimes gray, and with some orange on its tail and ears. Males are slightly larger than females. Bison (Bison bison) appear to be a rare food source for Coyotes, although coyotes have been known to get close to bison calves, as they are known to go after smaller prey. However, bison parents can be quite the protector in such situations. Coyote is foiled again! ⁣ ⁣ NPS image: American bison (Bison bison) roam the prairie at Theodore Roosevelt National Park alongside a coyote (Canis latrans).⁣ ⁣ #FindYourPark #nationalparkservice #northdakota #theodorerooseveltnationalpark #coyote #bison

  • We have important news about the Yellowstone Caldera......⁣ ⁣ Now that we have your attention, here is some important information to keep in mind when visiting a national park. (Don’t worry. Nothing to report from Yellowstone.)⁣ ⁣ Things to remember: ⁣ ⁣ 💡 If you bring it in, bring it out. Remember to take all belongings and equipment with you. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the rangers. Please don’t leave children or spouses.⁣ ⁣ 💡 We’d like to remind you that it is not against federal law to smile at a park ranger. Let’s all be friendly out there.⁣ ⁣ 💡 Please don’t run from bears or push your slower friends down in attempts of saving yourself. We’ve been over this before…just like the rest of your group currently stepping over the “friend” you just pushed down.*⁣ ⁣ 💡 Don’t feed the wildlife. That squirrel may look cute, but it will take a bite out of your finger faster than the sound of a ranger saying I told ya so. **⁣ ⁣ 💡 Keep safety in the picture. Nice selfie. Is that bison behind you? (We’re not sure. We asked people to draw us one, but we’re still unclear.)⁣ ⁣ 💡 If you don’t like the humor, may we suggest following....never mind. ***⁣ ⁣ Happy Friday! Thanks for reading til the end. Disclaimers below:⁣ ⁣ *In all seriousness. Don’t use your friend as bait.⁣ ⁣ ** See our previous post on Instagram.⁣ ⁣ ***We hope you’ll continue to follow your national parks! ⁣ ⁣ NPS Image: A tall ridge line and many rock hoodoos rise above the plains at Badlands National Park just after sunset.⁣ ⁣ #FindYourPark #nationalparkservice #thisweekoninstagram #badlands #traveltips

It is typically 17-21 inches long, with a tail length up to 8 inches—almost half the length of its body! Rock Squirrels also have quite the appetite. They are able to eat a diverse diet of nuts, seeds, cactus, fruits, vegetables, insects, candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup. Umm, syrup? • Someone call Santa, I’m about to sleigh this flying thing...⁣ ⁣ Do reindeer really know how to fly? Wait, isn’t that a caribou? Caribou and reindeer are almost identical, sharing the same genus and species name. It wasnt until about 2,000 years ago that they were domesticated in Eurasia and became what we know as the modern day reindeer.⁣ ⁣ Originally, caribou populated Alaska long before reindeer were introduced from Siberia by a missionary in 1892. Although they look almost identical, caribou can be identified by having longer legs and leaner bodies than reindeer. Reindeer are typically more sedentary, have thicker fur, and some may have a red nose. • Felt cute. Might delete later...⁣ ⁣ Members of the weasel family, martens may be cute, but they are also adept tree climbers! They have many physical adaptations including: powerful forelimbs, a long tail to help them balance, and well-developed claws. The claws are strongly curved and sharp, enabling the animal to climb trees with ease and rapidity. Its toes are webbed at the base and, being flexible and furry, they spread. Not bad. This gives the animal the ability to travel about in winter, whereas many other mammals would simply sink into and flounder about in the deep, soft snow.⁣ ⁣ NPS Image: A marten pokes out of a hole amongst the vegetation at Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park. ⁣ ⁣ #FeltCuteMightDeleteLater #FindYourPark #nationalparkservice #marten #minnesota @voyageursnps

Visitors are reminded that feeding wildlife creates a safety risk for humans as animals associate people with food; bears can also become aggressive in seeking additional food, especially when preparing to den for the winter. Animals that are fed by humans also have an increased likelihood of being drawn to roadways and injured by vehicles.⁣ ⁣ P.S. • I have two moods:⁣ 1. Namaste⁣ 2. I’ll cut you⁣ ⁣ Mood. Great Horned Owls are large birds of prey. Their large, ultra-sensitive eyes are set in a face shaped like a satellite dish, to capture dim nocturnal light and the faintest of sounds. Owl eyes dont move, but owls can turn their heads more than 180 degrees to look in any direction. They fly silently due to specially designed wing feathers, serrated on the leading edge, and fringed on the trailing edge, that prevent a typical whooshing sound. Soft downy feathers on other parts of their body further muffle any sounds of air movement. Will they cut you? Probably not. Best not agitate. Owls talons are very powerful, as they are used to capture prey. They are relatively short but strong, and one toe actually swivels backwards. Oh no it didn’t! Did you know Great Horned Owls are one of 8 owl species at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve? ⁣ ⁣ Image: Close-up of Great Horned Owl.
